Honoring a Houston Revolutionary
Slain Black Panther Leader
Carl B. Hampton
On Sunday, July 26, 2009 two activities will be held to commemorate the life and death of Carl Bernard Hampton. The Gravesite Remembrance will take place at 3:00pm at Golden Gate Cemetery 8400 Hirsch Road Houston , Texas . The Community Memorial will kick off at 5:00pm at 3212 Dowling Street Houston , Texas next to the PABA. The memorial will include a tour of the actual spot were Carl was gunned down by Houston police. The memorial on Dowling Street will also feature: a limited free food giveaway, survival program speakers, poets and edutainment.
Carl Hampton, a dynamic young Black Panther leader and Chairman of Houston’s People’s Party II was assassinated by the Houston Police Department on July 26, 1970. This blow against the Black Power Movement in Houston of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s was struck in the heart of the Black/African community on Dowling Street .
The memorial tribute has multiple objectives. First, to educate the community about the positive historical contributions made by Carl Hampton. Second, to stimulate unity and solutions around the issues confronting our communities today. Lastly, to begin the organizing for the 40th anniversary of the assassination next year in order to have a greater impact on solving community challenges.
Committee Members Include: Black Panther Party Alumni, People’s Party III, Sankofa Community Empowerment Organization, The Death Penalty Abolition Movement, Progressive Amateur Boxing Association (PABA), The National Black United Front- Houston Chapter (NBUF), New Panther Vanguard Movement

Carl was a good friend of mine. I was the co-founder of Inlet drug crisis center and we work closely with the people's party II. Carl was murdered by a police sniper on the top of a church who had a KULF newsman spotting for him. my father, and others, saw to it that this news man was run out of Houston on a rail. His name was Howard DuPree.
I became the construction manager for the Carl B Hampton free clinic until it became too dangerous for me to visit the ward.
I totally understood why the people in the ward were so angry. I was just grateful that I was able to get the construction project off the ground.
